Brazil Trade Mission – Workshop on the Smart Grid Business Case

SmartGrid Canada participated in a power and innovation mission to meet with electricity distributors to understand the smart grid market in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, São Paulo – Campinas and Brasilia) from March 07 to 11, 2016. We have partnered with the Canadian Consulate in Rio de Janeiro since 2012 to promote trade and R&D opportunities between Brazil and Canada.

We took a Canadian delegation with representatives from two leading utilities, Hydro One and Manitoba Hydro to meet with CPFL Energia and CEMIG power companies. This was a follow up visit to the Brazilian inbound mission to Canada in 2015. The objectives were to organize a workshop to share best practices and lessons learned from smart grid implementations in Canada, present on power utility services and enter into training and capacity building partnerships. Two days were spent at each utility in an effort to really understand synergies and collaboration opportunities.

The overall visit was a success in understanding the landscape and creating stronger relations. The Brazilian cities are in various stages of smart grid deployment. Canada and Brazil both have large territories with population concentrated in urban areas and dispersed over further apart rural ones. They have significant hydro-electricity resources and they are focused on modernizing their grids for the 21st century.  As a result, significant synergies were created between the two countries in the area of trade and research and development best practices sharing.
